FAMILY ATTITUDES AND PERSONALITY PECULIARITIES IN THE POLICY OF THE MOSCOW PRINCES OF THE XIV-XV CENTURIES

Abstract. The common assumption on the hereditary character of the policy of Moscow princes goes back to the “Course of Russian history” by V.O. Klyuchevsky. According to Klyuchevsky, the descendants of Daniel of Moscow were a reproduction of the same family type – a lengthy row ofmediocrities. This interpretation was organically linked with the overall picture of the national history created by the historian. It served as one of the components of the famous historical paradox by Klyuchevsky: in the history of Russia, low-level people accomplished great things. While appreciating the Kliuchevsky’s literary skills, a weak credibility of his proposed scheme must be recognized. Moscow Chronicles of the fourteenth to the fifteenth century demonstrate that the main condition for the development of a sustainable family type of political behavior, a direct inheritance of power from the father to the son and the transfer of power skills “from hand to hand”, was afar distant dream of a Moscow princely house. Due to a number of circumstances, the inheritance trajectory of supreme power by the descendants of Daniel lined up with an unexpected and unpredictable zigzags. Fathers usually went to a better world without having had time to transfer their political experience, their system of moral priorities to their sons. However, while losing on one field, the Moscow house won on the other area. Most of the Moscow princes were notburdened with their father’s imperatives and built their own policies. This freedom of action contributed to a more productive choice of goals and means of political struggle.

“ECONOMIC MIRACLE” (1955-1973) AND ITS OUTCOMES

Abstract. The Japanese economic miracle is the period (1955–1973) when GDP growth rates in Japan were extremely high, excessing sometimes 10% a year. It was possible thanks to structural reforms of 1945–1955 carried out first by the US occupational administration and then by the Japanese government. These reforms basically implied the demonopolization and demilitarization of the national economy, transformation of the agricultural sector and changes in labor legislation and thus constituted an institutional basis for the new economic model. The high involvement of the US in the respective processes can be explained by the fact that after 1949 the task of rebuilding Japan into a powerful regional actor and ally acquired strategic importance for theWashington. Liberalization and wide range market reforms served as a basis for accelerated development. Various approaches can be taken to describe the course of economic development of Japan, and the article applies an industry-wise approach and another one dealing with state planning. The article also castslight upon the way the Japanese government carried out modernization and tracks a shift of the government’s priorities at the time. The article concludes that Japan had gone through stages of accelerated industrialization, from resource-consuming industries to knowledge-intensive ones. Stable economic development enabled the government to work out and fulfil plans of economic development until 1973, when the “oil shock” put an end to the miracle. Depsite the successive slowdown of economic growth the “Japanese model” shaped in the above period still proves its efficiency and viability.
